More than vestiges of a faraway past, pre-hispanic musical instruments are used today by Guatemalan music groups. How are the pre-hispanic sounds brought to life today by Guatemalan bands? Anthropologist Juan Carlos Figueroa has researched about three bands and their relationships towards pre-hispanic musical instruments. Through the experiences of Grupo Sotz'il, Hacedor de Lluvia, and Música Maya Aj, Figueroa explains how they relate to the pre-hispanic past (some of the participants do not agree with the term) and, depending on their ethnic identity, how they define their practice as continuity or experimentation.
