A lecture for Reden+Tanzen series by TANZ GRAZ.
Using the word “decolonial” to address historical and geopolitical issues: dancing bodies, dancing aesthetics, and the ontologies of dance. These theoretical words are meant to open up a discussion in which we can share about the boundaries of what contemporary dance is and who is it for.
The talk is meant to be a response to the walls that we built maybe even without noticing. There is in fact a problem with what we think “contemporary dance” is, especially the way in which a canon operates, and how so many bodies looking for specialization, literacy, and knowledge about dance have no other choice but to deal with “contemporary dance”. What borders surround the idea of contemporary dance and how can we open the doors of an unequal dancing world?
This talk is inspired by thinking of models of relationality and reciprocity that we can build through dance practices. How can we open up the doors for multiple knowledges in contemporary dance? Do we need the label of “contemporary dance” at all?
Bodily meditation / talk / discussion.
Safe space based on empathy and respect.
